Sturgeon and Island Lakes are located in the Pine County. Sturgeon Lake, a large lake (1,457 acres) with a relatively small watershed (2,841 acres), is located 4 miles east of Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota. Island Lake, a moderate sized lake (582 acres) with a relatively large watershed (4,009 acres), is located 2 miles northeast of Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota. Land use with Sturgeon and Island Lakes' watersheds consists primarily of water (51 percent and 31 percent) and forested (18 percent and 36 percent) land use, respectively. Agricultural land for Sturgeon and Island Lakes. The percentage of agricultural land uses is somewhat high for lakes in this region of Minnesota-Northern Lakes and Forests ecoregion. Sturgeon and Island Lakes were sampled during the summer of 1992 by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) staff and citizens from the Windemere Township Lake and Landowners Association (Association). Water quality data collected during the study provide a basis for calculating summer mean total phosphorus, mean chlorophyll a, and Secchi transparency for each lake.
