Description
Crow Wing Lake is located 10 miles south of Baxter, MN in Crow Wing County. It covers 373 acres (Table 1). Crow Wing Lake has two inlets and one outlet, which classify it as a drainage lake. It has one natural inlet that enters the lake from the northeast corner, providing a reasonably steady source of water. A secondary inlet is located in the southeast corner and feeds the lake during periods of heavy local rainfall. One outlet is located on the western edge of the lake and feeds into the Mississippi river. Water quality data have been collected on Crow Wing Lake from 1990-2014 (Tables 2 & 3). These data show that the lake is eutrophic (TSI = 57) with algae blooms occurring in late summer and fall. Crow Wing Lake has been listed as impaired for excessive nutrients on the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's Impaired Waters List. Crow Wing Lake has an organized association and a Lake Improvement District that is involved in activities such as water quality monitoring and education.
